About Balanced Ecological Systems

Who I Am

My name is Steven Blaisdell, and I'm the owner and operator of Balanced Ecological Systems. I'm certified in Ecological Restoration by the University of Minnesota, and am certified in Vermont as a category 2 pesticide applicator, license #1732-5863.

I have worked with city parks departments, conservation organizations, and private landowners in planning and implementing invasive plant control and land restoration projects, including NRCS contracted sites. I specialize in removal and control of the most common woody and herbaceous  invasive plant species in Vermont and the Northeast - buckthorn, bittersweet, honeysuckle, multiflora rose, etc - especially high density, difficult infestations.

As a restorationist, I assist natural succession of native plant communities through assessment and planning, invasive management, and enhanced native establishment.

What We Do

Services provided by Balanced Ecological Systems are designed to return the natural world to the diverse resiliency lost through invasion by non-native plant species. Without active management, invasive species can cause profound harm by reducing complexity and ecosystem services while providing little or no benefit. These effects have real world consequences, including economic consequences, for insects, birds, animals, and people.

The good news is that with intention, planning, persistence, and commitment, invasive species can be reduced to manageable levels, even on a landscape scale. The key, however, is persistence. There is no "one and done." Invasives did not appear overnight, and they will not disappear with a wave of the hand. Please keep this in mind when you contemplate restoring your land to its deserved richness and health.
