About Balanced Ecological Systems

Who I Am

My name is Steven Blaisdell, and I'm the owner and operator of Balanced Ecological Systems. I'm certified in Ecological Restoration by the University of Minnesota, and am certified in Vermont as a category 2A pesticide applicator, license #1732-5863. I have worked with city parks departments, conservation organizations, and private landowners in planning, implementing, and managing invasive plant control and land restoration projects. My work is focused on removal and long term control of the most common and widespread invasive plant species in Vermont and the Northeast - buckthorn, bittersweet, honeysuckle, and multiflora rose, along with burning bush, Japanese barberry, Russian and autumn olive, and other species. As a restorationist, I specialize in assisting natural succession of native plant communities through careful assessment and planning, effective invasive management, and enhanced native establishment as indicated.

What We Do

Services provided by Balanced Ecological Systems are designed to return the natural world to the complex and diverse resiliency lost through invasion by non-native, exotic plant species. Without management, invasive species can - and do - cause profound harm to ecosystems by reducing complexity, diversity, and resiliency while providing little or no benefit. These effects have significant, real world consequences, including economic consequences, for insects, birds, animals, and people.

The good news is that with intention, thoughtful planning, persistence, and commitment, the prevalence of invasive species can be reduced to manageable levels, even on a landscape scale. The key, however, is persistence. There is no "one and done." Invasives did not appear overnight, and they will not disappear with a wave of the hand. Please keep this in mind when you contemplate restoring your land to its deserved richness and health.
